Project 1A
Finding Opportunities
In this assignment, we are to work as a group to produce a visualization of Kampung Bharu, Kuala Lumpur in relation to the immediate context, which consist of 3 levels:
1. Existing situation: how the site context is structured
2. Identification of urban opportunities, issues and constraints.
3. Recommendation concerning spatial organization and pre-conditions for location and design of the different urban elements – based on the data and literature review.
This group project is based on contextual analysis. The analysis will be contributing findings on:
a) identifying urban opportunities, issues and constraints specifically on the streets and neighborhood areas.
b) identifying the urban morphology in the historic core of Kampung Bharu. Determine the type of mixed-use activities within the public and private domain, and the in-between spaces that form part of their heritage and socio-economic status.
c) meetings and discussions with the locals and interest groups about possible strategies to further enhance their daily lives with architectural propositions.
d) Other references such as demographic, environmental and economic data available on academic literatures, printed media or online.
Project 1B
Promoting the Opportunities
In this assignment, in a group of 2 people, we will develop an urban manifesto and explore the ‘tangible and intangible’ sprawling streetscapes in the historical urban village of Kampung Bharu. Develop a series of analysis and academic proposition, translate it into a functional urban space that will co-exist with the current surrounding (not more than 300sqm). We are to search into specific theories in the design phase of urbanism such as eco-city, gastronomic city, creative city, garden city, sustainable city in Kampung Bharu behavior setting. The space is in correlation with one of the 6 dimensions in Urban Design. Through the choice of theory, resolving the urban issues that have been distinguished.
The Urban Rejuvenation of Kampung Bharu must optimize the theme of AWAM, ‘Awareness’, ‘Welcoming’, ‘Articulate’, ‘Mindfulness’ which means public by exploring the connection between urban densification, public buildings and public realm as space of exchange to build a future-proof environment while preserving the vivid tradition.
Project 1C
Sustaining the Opportunities
In this assignment, individually to create an architectural design of a city vocational college. This stage of project is to demonstrate that the ideas promoted in Project 1b will appreciate the idea of the city as a community. We are required to satisfy the spatial, structural and technical attributes in order to deliver a community centric building of approximately 5,000 – 8,000 sqm of gross floor area (GFA). Besides that, also required to explore and critically reflect on theories in urban design to enrich our knowledge on resolving the urban issues relevant to your architectural design positions.
Design Parameters:
- We are required to choose one of the schools:
Nursing Vocational College or Hospitality & Culinary Arts Vocational College
- The architecture must address the urban development issues that have been identified in Project 1a and 1b.
- Emphasis to be given on the environment, socio-cultural, economy, suitable land use and human comfort issues in buildings
- GFA of 5,000 – 8,000 sqm with plot ratio to refer to local authority requirements
- To provide essential and appropriate amenities/infrastructure according to individual concept and target groups. Hence, the spaces should be fully justified and appropriate
- Compliance to statutory requirements (relevant Acts, Laws, Guidelines)
