Community Service : RE-ROOM
SITE VISIT
On the first day of site visit, I had a bad impression of the classroom that we are required to refurnish. The place were fulled with unused furniture and non usable shelves. What we had in mind was to change the function of the room.
We've done interviews with the community: students and teachers to get their feedback on how to improve space for the community. Most of the feedback was about atmosphere which is paint of classrooms and public speaking platform for students to perform.
We came out with ideas of making stages, shelves, mini gardening area, simple mural art and repaint walls.
Our intention is to refurnish the room with language room.

SEARCH FOR RECYCLED GOODS
I took part in the process of searching recycled goods as we planned to do community service work within our given budget. We contacted the owner of distributor of building materials.
It is a good exposure to let us discover materials that can be re-purposed and can last for a longer period of time.
We also take considerations of the pros and cons of using recycled timber pallets, the toughest point was deciding on how existing pallets can be changed into usable furniture.
DIGITAL MODELING ON TRANSFORMATION OF CLASSROOM
Revit modeling of furniture is drawn to draft out the final outcome of classroom. The overview of the space would lead us to proceed on each stages in transforming the classroom into language room.

FURNITURE
We collected recycled pallets from the factory and as it arrives on the day we are suppose to built up shelves, stages and gardening board, we found out that the dimension of the delivered pallets had slight difference from the ones we drew on Revit software.
As a team, we did sort out several ways to conclude our final plans on how to proceed with every steps on building up the structures of the furniture. Personally, I felt lost due to the physical strength that I had, I'm much weaker than the others and thought i will be left out. But it was good to be part of the team, as we divided into measuring team, fixing team and refinement team. Everyone get to experience difference progression of the final outcome.

MOVING TO SITE
Repainting of walls, mural quotes and furniture are done on site within 3 full working days.
Repaint of walls was the toughest part among others as we need to follow the procedures repainting. First is to scrap the walls, then dust away and then proceed to repainting new tones.
It was challenging as it took time for us to finish the steps in every face of the walls. As a team, I understand the concept of working in a working environment. It might took time to finish a particular job within seconds but the determination from everyone of us clarify the consistency in producing works that are efficient.

FINAL OUTCOME
Our intention of this project is to create a space for the community to interact with their teachers and peers. A platform created - language room, encourage students to step up of their comfort zones engaging in public.
It is satisfying to work as part of the team to understand the community needs and prove the outcome that fulfill their requirements.
The use of recycle materials increase awareness of creating an environmental sustainable product/ design.
