Component 1
Contextual Studies, Precedents and Position

Based on the site visit to Medan Pasar and the Central Market annexe as well as class discussions around the topic of ‘Culture and Community in the City’, this component will form the foundation for this semester’s inquiry into the theme of TROPICAL HIGH-RISE DWELLING.

In this component will investigate the site from the perspective of ‘Culture and Community’ while at the same time building up a class database of architectural precedents to inform their architectural exploration in Component 2.

Component 1 is an individual component to prepare:

i. Mapping and analysis of the neighborhood surrounding Medan Pasar and the Central Market, from the lens of ‘Culture and Community’.
ii. A sample of historical and contemporary precedents of ground-breaking examples of housing projects from around the world, with focus on the tropics.
iii. Individual Positions in approaching Component 2 based on the findings of Component 1.

Component 2A
Theoretical Formulation & Design Intentions

Based on the preliminary findings and positioning in Component 1, we are to deepen their theoretical understanding of the subject matter and to arrive at a clear set of individual Design Intentions to guide the architectural exploration.

Component 2A is an individual component to prepare:
i. Theoretical foundation for the  line of inquiry in developing a design for a TROPICAL HIGH-RISE DWELLING.
ii. A clear design intention which would then be developed into an architectural scheme.

Component 2B
The Architectural Project

This component is the culmination of the semester’s inquiry into the theme of theme of TROPICAL HIGH-RISE DWELLING. Based on the findings and supported by in class discussions on literature and architectural explorations, we are to develop individual projects that address the possibilities of TROPICAL HIGH-RISE DWELLING.

This will be an architecture that adds value to the existing community and mediates between the notion of progress and of retaining the uniqueness of a place amidst the evolving challenges of the contemporary city. To develop projects that critically examine the building type and question the current practices of building such type. The projects are to be explorative and conceptually innovative while demonstrating a thorough understanding of construction and building technology.
