Project 1

Case Study: Analyzing Passive building design strategies

In this assignment, with a group of 6 students is required to choose a space in Taylor’s Uni Lakeside Campus. Identify basic building design for thermal comfort for this space and also the external surfaces for this space. Record and analyze the existing condition in terms of thermal comfort of the interior directly affected by the environmental factors such as sun and wind. Diagrams are encouraged to give a clearer vision of analysis.

The objective is to identify and define the principles of heat transfer in relation to building and people. Understand thermal comfort and discuss factors relating to thermal comfort. Analyze the effect of thermal comfort factors in a person and in a space. To be able to criticize design of the space in terms of thermal comfort by referring to MS1525, UBBL and GBI standards.

Reflection

In this assignment, I've understood more about the shading with the usage of revit, as it helps to identify sun shades effectiveness throughout the year. I did use this function in my Final studio project while exploring the sun shadings in my building. This selected space had various passive design components which improved the climate in the interior as well as encourage students or lecturer to relax in this designed space. Ventilation are crossed ventilated with natural air coming in and out from the rotatable wooden louvres, sun penetration can be control by the louvres for better shading according to user's comfort.

In conclusion, the challenge is to reduce the thermal comfort, in relation to precedent studies and site analysis.
