Project 1a
Pre-Design Studies
Located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, we are required to do an in-depth and comprehensive analysis and presentation on the intangible and intangible aspects of the site, hence look into the possibilities of aligning these findings in developing the main programme: ‘A Collaborative Working Community in the Heart of KL’. This phase is the where students (in-group) will assemble all the parts and pieces to a bigger picture. Parts will include the following aspects:
a. brief historical background of the place and site.
b. user profile and understanding whom we are designing
c. study solar analysis and other site specific analysis
d. reviewing building code and local or city ordinance
e. establishing design parameters
f. research on precedents or do actual visitation to projects
The study will enable students a full an in-depth understanding of the people, place and time.
As a group (per tutorial group or studio), we are required to go to the site to perform investigation and analysis. In this pre-design phase, we are required to conduct studies on users and the contextual conditions of the site and conduct research on guidelines, ongoing activities and future development. We are required to apply the urban analytical technique(s) learned in Architectural Design Studio V and Theories of Architecture and Urbanism.

Final Design and Comprehensive Design Report
Once the design strategy has been fully developed, we are to come up with a fully resolved design; design should demonstrate student’s ability to integrate considerations for technology environment and cultural context through a finalized architectural design. As a final year student, the work is expected to demonstrate critical thinking skills (conceptualization), structural sense (buildability), sensitivity (key issues & environment), maturity (considering by laws & compliance with regulations), exploration (tectonic thinking and creative use of materials & space) and workability (a well referenced spatial organization & planning). Students are expected to come
up with a final design presentation.
